Bitcoin vs Gold

On the record so far, gold has been the steadier store of value and Bitcoin the more volatile one. U.S. financial regulators count Bitcoin falls of about 80% in 2018 and about 75% in seven months of 2021 to 2022. Gold's worst recent slide, on annual average prices, was about 30% from 2012 to 2015. Bitcoin vs gold isn't a choice between two forms of one asset, though. Both are scarce and neither pays income, but they don't behave alike.

What a Store of Value Is and Why Bitcoin Gets Compared With Gold

A store of value is one of three jobs money does. IRS Notice 2014-21 defines virtual currency as a digital representation of value that functions as a medium of exchange, a unit of account or a store of value. The third job is the plain one: you put purchasing power in today and expect to take it back out when you need it. Gold here means physical gold bullion, the coins and bars a buyer can hold.

Bitcoin is often called "digital gold," wording that appears even in the executive order of March 6, 2025 that created the U.S. Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. The order rests the label on Bitcoin's scarcity and security, and the two share one more trait: neither pays interest or dividends. A Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago primer marks where the likeness stops: once created, a bitcoin "has no value other than in exchange, contrary to a gold coin."

Scarcity: Gold Grows About 1.5% a Year and Bitcoin Under 1%

Bitcoin's supply is capped and gold's isn't, yet the real growth rates sit closer than that slogan suggests. The World Gold Council estimates that about 222,600 metric tons of gold have been mined in all of history, around two-thirds of it since 1950, and nearly all of it still exists. Mines added an estimated 3,300 metric tons in 2025, the U.S. Geological Survey reports. Set that output against the stock (3,300 / 222,600) and gold grows about 1.5% a year.

Gold supply barely answers to price. In 2025 the dollar gold price rose 67%, yet recycling gained just 3%, to 1,404 metric tons, the World Gold Council found.

Bitcoin's supply follows a rule written into its software. The Chicago Fed primer lays it out: the reward for adding a block of transactions started at 50 bitcoins and halves every 210,000 blocks, about every four years, so the total approaches 21 million and never passes it. The chain passed block 970,000 in October 2026, four halvings in, so the reward is 3.125 bitcoins. At six blocks an hour that's 52,560 blocks and about 164,000 new coins a year, under 1% of the roughly 20 million already issued.

Two details change what the 21 million cap means. It rests on agreement, not geology, because the rules are open-source software and, in the primer's words, "Bitcoin is what bitcoin users use." Scarce also isn't the same as unique. A 2021 study in the Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Finance notes that gold can't be replicated, while every feature of Bitcoin can be by issuing a similar coin under another name.

History: Gold Has Floated Since 1971 and Bitcoin Launched in 2009

Gold's record as a freely priced investment is shorter than its reputation. Under the Bretton Woods system the dollar converted to gold at a fixed $35 an ounce until President Nixon closed the gold window on August 15, 1971. Only since 1971 has the dollar price of gold been allowed to vary freely. Americans didn't regain the legal right to buy, hold and sell gold until December 31, 1974, under Public Law 93-373.

Bitcoin's record starts in 2009. Its founding paper is titled "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System," and it describes a way to send online payments without a financial institution. The phrase "store of value" doesn't appear in it. Gold comes up once, as an analogy for how new coins are issued.

Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded products were cleared to list on January 10, 2024, and that wasn't an endorsement. The SEC chair's statement that day says the agency "did not approve or endorse bitcoin." It draws the contrast with metals funds too: the metals behind those funds have consumer and industrial uses, while bitcoin is "primarily a speculative, volatile asset."

Who Uses and Holds Each Today

Gold has buyers who never think about investing. The U.S. Geological Survey's 2025 breakdown of gold consumption puts jewelry at 40% and electrical and electronics at 7%, and central banks hold about 39,000 metric tons, 18% of the gold above ground. The U.S. government now holds both. The Treasury has 8,130 metric tons of gold. The Strategic Bitcoin Reserve was funded with bitcoin already forfeited to the Treasury in criminal and civil cases, which the order says isn't to be sold.

Volatility: The Falls on Record for Bitcoin and Gold

Volatility is where Bitcoin and gold part ways. The Financial Stability Oversight Council, a panel of U.S. financial regulators, found that from 2018 through July 2022 Bitcoin's realized volatility was higher than that of oil, stocks or bonds.

The measures and windows differ, and an annual average smooths out moves inside a year, so don't rank the rows to the percentage point. The pattern is still plain. Each of Bitcoin's falls took away more than half its price, and neither of gold's did.

Bitcoin has calmed lately. Yahoo Finance reported in September 2026 that its 30-day realized volatility had compressed to 27.2%, quieter than 98.5% of all days in its history. Gold is the calmer asset, not a calm one. After the gold price set 53 new all-time highs in 2025, the World Gold Council put the second-quarter 2026 average 8% below the first-quarter record.

How Each Behaves in a Downturn

Three downturns show the difference, and Bitcoin wasn't around for the earliest. Through the financial crisis, from 2008 to 2009, gold's annual average price rose about 12%. Bitcoin launched in 2009. In the 2020 pandemic shock, U.S. Geological Survey data show gold fell in March before reaching a then-record in August, and its 2020 average ended 26% above 2019's.

The third test ran from late 2021 into 2022. Bitcoin fell about 75% over seven months, while gold's average price for 2022 was about the same as for 2021.

A Chicago Fed study of 1971 to 2021 explains what gold responds to. It tested inflation expectations, long-term real interest rates (rates after inflation) and pessimism about the economy, and the authors call the evidence that gold protects against bad economic times "highly supportive." Inflation is the weaker link. Gold prices fell dramatically in the disinflation of 1980 to 1983, and from 2000 to 2021 long-term inflation expectations stayed near 2% while the real gold price rose more than fivefold. In the study's annual data for 1971 to 2019, a one-point rise in long-term real rates lowers the real gold price by 13.1%.

Bitcoin has tracked stocks instead. IMF economists found the correlation between Bitcoin and S&P 500 returns rose from 0.01 in 2017 to 2019 to 0.36 in 2020 to 2021, on a scale where 1 means moving in step. That was higher than the correlation between stocks and gold. A New York Fed staff report found that Bitcoin, unlike other U.S. asset classes, doesn't respond to monetary and macroeconomic news.

What Owning Each One Involves

Bitcoin Is a Private Key

Owning Bitcoin means controlling a private key. The SEC's custody bulletin for retail investors is blunt: "If you lose your private key, you permanently lose access to the crypto assets in your wallet." Leave the key with a third-party custodian and the risk changes, because a custodian that's hacked, shuts down or goes bankrupt can leave you without access. The CFTC's Bitcoin brochure adds that virtual currencies are commonly targeted by hackers and carry no assurance of recourse if stolen.

Gold Is an Object You Can Weigh and Measure

Owning gold means holding gold coins or gold bars, or paying someone to store them. The risks are physical: theft, storage cost and counterfeits. The U.S. Mint's buyer checklist says to give any offer below the current market price extra scrutiny and to check a coin against its published weight and diameter.

Federal law sets the weight and diameter of 1 oz American Gold Eagles at 33.931 grams and 32.7 mm. The coin weighs more than a troy ounce (31.1 grams) because it's 91.67% gold, and 91.67% of 33.931 grams is 31.1 grams of pure gold. Weight and size won't catch every fake, because tungsten has the same 19.3 g/cm3 density as gold.

A gold coin's price is its gold content times the spot price, plus a premium, meaning the amount charged over spot. The U.S. Mint prices its bullion coins at the prevailing market price of the metal plus a small premium for minting, distribution and marketing. It also requires the Authorized Purchasers who distribute those coins to maintain a two-way market, buying coins as well as selling them. Each trade still costs a spread between the buying and selling price. Spot moves by the minute, so see the live gold price chart for the current figure.

Taxes and Retirement Accounts

The IRS treats gold and Bitcoin differently. Physical gold is a collectible under the tax code, and Topic 409 taxes net long-term gains on collectibles at a maximum 28% rate. Bitcoin is property, not currency, and selling it or trading it for goods is a taxable disposal. Inside an IRA, gold is limited to certain U.S. coins and qualifying bullion in the physical possession of a bank or an IRS-approved nonbank trustee. Where Each Fits in a Portfolio

Gold and Bitcoin do different jobs. Gold has the longer record, the smaller falls and evidence of holding up in bad economic times, but it pays no income, costs something to store and insure, and can slide for years. Bitcoin is a newer, higher-risk asset that has moved with stocks and more than halved three times.

Timing has hurt ordinary Bitcoin buyers. A Bank for International Settlements study of trading-app data from August 2015 to December 2022 found that a majority of crypto app users in nearly all economies made losses on their Bitcoin, as smaller investors bought while large holders sold. Neither asset comes with a promise. The CFTC lists a pitch that a gold purchase is "guaranteed to rise" among the signs of precious metals fraud, and the same test fits any Bitcoin pitch.

Gold Bullion on Our Two-Way Market

Our marketplace handles the gold half of this comparison, in both directions. Product pages across our gold catalog show a bid beside the ask, so the price to sell is visible before you buy. Cryptocurrency through BitPay is one of the payment methods we accept, and our post on how to buy gold with cryptocurrency walks through it. The IRS counts that payment as a disposal of the Bitcoin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does gold go down when Bitcoin goes up?

No stable relationship runs in either direction. A 2021 study in the Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Finance found a near-zero correlation between Bitcoin and gold returns across time periods and return frequencies. The reading shifts with the window. In early September 2026 Bitcoin's 90-day correlation with gold reached +0.50, the highest since 2020, and 90 days is a short window. Neither has reliably offset the other.

Is Bitcoin more valuable than gold?

One bitcoin and one troy ounce of gold are different units, so the two prices don't compare directly. A fair comparison multiplies each price by how much exists: about 20 million bitcoins against about 222,600 metric tons of gold. At 32,150.7 troy ounces per metric ton, that gold stock is about 7.2 billion troy ounces. Both prices move daily, so any ranking is a snapshot.

What if you put $1000 in Bitcoin 10 years ago?

A dollar figure would describe the past decade, not the next one, so the useful answer is what holding took. Anyone who held Bitcoin for that decade sat through falls of about 80% in 2018 and about 75% in 2021 to 2022, then 54% from the October 2025 record.
